Audio Student Technology Assistant

Since September 2022, I have worked for UT Austin's Liberal Arts Development Studios as a Student Technology Assistant. My role as an audio STA is to edit/record podcasts for the University of Texas and mix/run live classes. To run classes, I was the center of communication between professors, project managers, and other STAs (Camera, Design). This required me to consistently lead others before class sessions to ensure class was ready to run, for instance, working with professors to ensure their course material and mics were ready or testing videos with film STAs. I mixed using the Allen & Heath SQ-7 mixing board, which I am now very familiar with. With these skills, I have been able to run the following classes: Introduction to Theatre, Intro to Sexuality, Intro to Nutrition, and Jazz Appreciation, some of the biggest classes the university has to offer.

Another skill I learned was working as an STA was how to edit podcasts. I edited a wide variety of podcasts, ranging from LatinXperts, a podcast about Latino Heritage in Texas, to The Team Behind the Team podcast, a podcast detailing UT Austin's sports teams and coaching. I edited these podcasts on Pro Tools, consistently using Fabfilter Pro-Q 2 for EQ, Pro-C 2 for compression, and Pro D-S for a De-Essr. I also used Izotope RX to edit audio recorded in the field and clean up noise. We also did recordings, specifically using Electro-Voice RE-20s and RØDE K2 microphones to help facilitate the majority of our recording.

While I learned many technical skills as an STA, I learned how to be a leader and work in a collaborative environment to get a project done. I learned how to communicate with talent and other colleagues in a professional matter, giving me the expertise to communicate with others skillfully. These skills have made me comfortable leading people and I hope to get the opportunity to guide a team in the future.
